A total of 314 voters took part in a recent GPN-American City & County poll on standing desks in the office. About 23 percent (72 voters) currently work at a standing desk. More than half (52 percent) of the voters said standing desks should not be mandatory in government offices.

Brad Shipp, public relations manager at Varidesk, weighed in on the topic. The company offers a variety of standing solutions for the office. Varidesk is based in Coppell, Texas. The company’s products offer easy setup. They give an organization’s existing furniture new life. There's no need for an installation company or even a toolbox when installing the company's products. The firm’s products arrives fully assembled and ready to use in minutes. Users just pull the equipment out of the box, put it on top of the desk or table already in place, and it's ready to go. Here are Shipp’s views, below:

GPN: Are more offices/workplaces using standing desks now?

Brad Shipp: More offices and workplaces are adopting standing desks as a way to build non-sedentary work environments. Active office environments help increase productivity, communication, creativity and have a range of health benefits as well. The benefits have been well-documented from various research outlets from the Mayo Clinic to the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

GPN: Will more offices/workplaces start using standing desks in 2016?

BS: Yes, we see many more offices from major multinational companies to local municipalities adopting sit/stand desks. Especially in the government sector, individuals are looking to increase productivity and decrease health care costs; non-sedentary work environments can help do both.

GPN: Are standing desks a healthy alternative to government workers and other workers?

BS: The human body is designed to move. We are not designed to be sitting at a desk all day long. What is important to all workers, including those in the government, is to find a way to combat “sitting disease.” Sit/stand desks are a great way to build active office environments, which is one of the best ways to combat “sitting diseases.”

GPN: Thank you, Brad Shipp, for your views.

The video demonstrates the Pro Plus 36. It is a standing desk sized to accommodate those with dual-monitor setups or larger workspace needs.
